Fuel & Air Systems

Harley-Davidson & V-Twin Fuel Systems and Intakes

More air and properly calibrated fuel delivery are the foundation of every meaningful V-Twin performance build. Mad Lads Moto stocks high-flow air cleaners, intake manifolds, fuel controllers, throttle bodies, fuel pumps, and complete stage one intake kits for Harley-Davidson and Indian V-Twin platforms. A performance air cleaner is typically the first modification any Harley rider makes, and for good reason: the stock air box on most Milwaukee-Eight and Twin Cam models is a significant restriction that leaves real power on the table. Pair a free-flowing intake with a quality fuel tuner and a performance exhaust and you have the foundation of a stage one build that transforms the way your machine pulls from idle through the top of the rev range.

Do I need to retune my Harley-Davidson after installing a performance air cleaner?

Yes. Installing a high-flow air cleaner changes the volume and velocity of air entering the engine, which shifts the air to fuel ratio away from the factory calibration. Running a performance intake without retuning the fuel injection results in a lean condition that reduces power, increases engine temperature, and over time can cause damage to pistons and valves. A fuel tuner or ECU flash calibrated for your specific intake and exhaust combination corrects the fuel delivery to match the new airflow and is a required part of any stage one build done correctly. Never install a performance intake on a fuel injected Harley-Davidson without addressing the fueling.

What is the difference between a slip-on air cleaner and a complete intake kit for a Harley?

A slip-on or bolt-on air cleaner replaces the stock filter element and cover while retaining the factory air box backing plate and intake tract. It is the simplest and least expensive intake upgrade and provides a moderate improvement in airflow with minimal installation complexity. A complete intake kit replaces the entire air box assembly including the backing plate, intake manifold, and filter with a purpose-built high-flow system designed to maximize airflow into the throttle body. Complete kits deliver greater airflow gains than slip-on filters and are the better choice for stage two and stage three builds where cam and displacement upgrades demand maximum intake capacity to support the increased airflow requirements of the modified engine.
