Base Layers & Heated Clothing

What you wear under your gear matters as much as the gear itself. A technical base layer regulates body temperature, manages moisture, and reduces friction against your skin during long rides, hard effort enduro days, and cold weather missions. Mad Lads Moto stocks moisture-wicking compression base layers, mid-weight thermal underlayers, and full heated clothing systems for riders who refuse to let the temperature dictate their season. Heated jackets, heated vests, heated glove liners, and heated pant liners from Klim, Gerbing, ActionHeat, and Alpinestars connect to your bike's 12V system or run on battery packs, delivering consistent warmth at altitude and in sub-freezing conditions. For Colorado riders pushing into the mountains year-round, a proper base layer and heated underlayer system is not optional gear. It is essential kit.

What base layer material works best for riding?

Merino wool and synthetic moisture-wicking fabrics are the two best options for riding base layers. Merino wool regulates temperature naturally in both cold and warm conditions, resists odor better than synthetics, and feels comfortable directly against the skin for long days in the saddle. Synthetic fabrics like polyester and nylon blends wick moisture faster, dry quicker, and are generally more durable through repeated washing. Avoid cotton entirely as a base layer for riding. Cotton absorbs moisture and holds it against your skin, which causes rapid heat loss in cold conditions and uncomfortable clamminess in warm weather. For cold weather and heated system compatibility, a thin merino or synthetic base layer under a heated vest or jacket liner provides the most efficient and comfortable setup.

How do heated riding jackets and liners work?

Heated riding jackets and liners use resistance heating elements woven into the fabric to generate warmth across the core, back, and sometimes the sleeves and collar. They power either through a direct 12V connection to your motorcycle's electrical system using a SAE connector, or through a rechargeable battery pack for riders who want a self-contained system independent of their bike. Most systems offer multiple heat settings controlled by a simple button or a paired app. Gerbing and Klim use 12V bike-powered systems preferred by touring and ADV riders for unlimited run time. Battery-powered options from ActionHeat and similar brands work well for shorter rides and off-grid use where wiring into the bike is not practical.
